Connecting the Canal – Friday Segment 13, Colfax Connections and the Arsenal (W&T)
January 1, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pmFree
SEGMENT 13 Colfax Connections and the Arsenal
TYPE: W&T | PACE: 3 mph |TERRAIN: Lots of sidewalk, small hills, dirt/pebble trail | DIFFICULTY: Moderate| DISTANCE: Approx. 6 miles
Walk Description: In partnership with the High Line Canal Conservancy, we will walk the entire High Line Canal, one segment at a time, covering most of the 71-mile trail. Check out our overview page here for more information on all of our walking events.
Segment 13 of 14. Miles 61-66. On this segment, we’ll amble through northern Aurora and follow the Canal as it crosses Colfax once and Tower Road twice. We’ll see the old connections to the Army Arsenal, historically the Canal’s largest stakeholder, and understand why the Canal stopped flowing water past its headgate #157 near First Creek. At the time the “large truck farms” produced produce for the Rose Hill area and beyond, but the failure of those farms led to the decision to stop the Canal’s flow further. With money from the lottery, the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge plans to expand access into the Refuge from this First Creek area. We’ll talk about the history of the Arsenal and its expansion as a Wildlife Refuge, focusing on the importance of clean water in the process.
Walk Leader: Josh Phillips, and enthusiastic Walking Movement Leader from the High Line Canal Conservancy will lead this walk. You can reach him at 802-598-2664 or [email protected]
Meeting Location: Park at the end of the segment at 1780 Andes St, Aurora park along street. Bus stop 21871, Rte 15. We will meet at the end of the segment, park, and then carpool to the beginning of the segment. Please be parked and ready to walk at 7:20 am. We will leave no later than 7:35 to the starting destination.
Carpool to Here: Park 4538 Perth St, Denver, CO. Small visitor parking lot next to this address. This is a neighborhood, so please be kind and quiet as we gather. We will walk the segment together. At the end of the walk, we will carpool back to the beginning of the segment to return people to their cars.
Teamwork: In order for us to have a great time, enjoy the segment, and get everyone to the beginning and ends, we must work as a team. Patience, guidance and erring on the side of positivity are crucial for a successful and joyful segment.
Restrooms: There are restrooms at a Starbucks along the way.
Driving Liability: If you are not comfortable carpooling, please make other arrangements to meet us at the start of the walk and for you to depart the walk. Alternatively, you can take a Lyft. If you use this link and you’re a new Lyft user, you get a credit toward your first ride. If you have questions about how parking/carpooling/transit will work, please contact your walking movement leader. If you choose to drive, please remember that you must have liability insurance and you assume all risks as a driver or passenger. If asked, please be prepared to show your proof of insurance.
Welcome Waivers: Please fill out the online “Welcome Waiver” or download, print, sign, and turn in a hard copy. You only need to do this once a year with Walk2Connect.

Cancellation Policy: We only cancel in extreme weather conditions on our path, such as ice, hail, or lightening.
-This particular segment is much different than the other 13 segments, as the Trail and the Canal do not meander hand-in-hand. We’ll meander in/around/by/off the Canal, eventually meeting up with it to walk along it for the rest of our 71 miles.
This program is in partnership with the High Line Canal Conservancy. For more information about the entire trail, see www.highlinecanal.org.
