SEGMENT 4 Stapleton to Commerce City
TYPE: W&T | PACE: 2-3 mph |TERRAIN: Lots of sidewalk, small hills, dirt/pebble trail | DIFFICULTY: Moderate| DISTANCE: Approx. 3.5 miles
Walk Description: In partnership with the Sand Creek Greenway Partnership we will walk the entire Sand Creek Greenway, one segment at a time, covering most of the 14-mile trail. Check out our overview page here for more information on all of our walking events.
Segment 4 of 4. Miles 11-14. On this segment, we’ll start just west of Stapleton and end at the Sand Creek’s trail end in Commerce City. Leaving Stapleton, we’ll continue along the creek into Commerce City, learning and seeing why Commerce City got its name. We’ll see how industry is protecting the creek, pass the historic Riverfront Cemetery, and end our walk at the confluence of the Sand Creek and the Platte River. We may see some pretty big catfish along the way!
Walking Movement Leader: Chris Englert, a Walk2Connect Member-owner, lives off the Sand Creek and consistently answers the question, “Where’s the Sand Creek?” She is author of The Best Urban Hikes: Denver. Robbin Mitchell, a board member for the Sand Creek Greenway Partnership, leads walks along the High Line and elsewhere in Aurora on a weekly basis.
Carpooling: In order for all of us to complete this walk, we will organize into carpools. If you are not willing to BOTH drive and ride in a carpool, please contact Chris immediately so we can make arrangements. Please remember that we will be working as one giant team, and all members of the team are necessary for everyone to have a positive experience.
Meeting Location, Parking, Carpooling, and Planning: We will meet at the end of the segment. Park at the trail end parking lot at 6400 York St Denver, CO. Please be parked and ready to walk by 8:45 am. There are bathrooms at the start of the walk. If you want to take transit, bus 12 stops nearby.
We will leave no later than 9:05 am. From here, we will gather into a smaller group of cars and drive to the start of the walk at the 6198 E 52nd Ave Commerce City. If you are not comfortable carpooling, please make other arrangements to meet us at the start of the walk and for you to depart the walk. Alternatively, you can take a Lyft. If you use this link and you’re a new Lyft user, you get a credit toward your first ride.
We will then walk the segment. When we get to the Trail End, a group of drivers will be needed to carpool the original drivers to Stapleton.
Welcome Waiver: All walkers, each year, must sign the Walk2Connect Welcome Waiver.
