SEGMENT 10  Expo Park to Cherry Creek (Full Moon) (rescheduled to Sunday, Feb 17)

TYPE: W&T | PACE: 3 mph |TERRAIN: Lots of sidewalk, small hills, dirt/pebble trail | DIFFICULTY: Moderate| DISTANCE: Approx. 5.8 miles

Walk Description: In partnership with the High Line Canal Conservancy, we will walk the entire High Line Canal, one segment at a time, covering most of the 71-mile trail. Check out our overview page here for the entire schedule. This walk is a FULL MOON walk. We will start just before dusk and finish after dark. You will need to bring a headlamp or flashlight. If you would rather not walk in the dark, you can walk it on your own, or ask a walking movement volunteer to lead at a different time.

Segment 10 of 14 Miles 50-44. On this special Full Moon segment, we will cross from Aurora into Denver. We’ll say hello to the Windsor Garden residents then Fairmount Cemetery, the Canals’ second largest and furthest current customer.  We’ll continue past Cherry Creek County Club golf course then finish near the intersection of the High Line Canal and Cherry Creek. We have a couple of busy street crossings at Exposition/Havana and Mississippi/Parker  – we will cross these together.

Walk Leader: Carol J. Smith, a Walking Movement Leader, is enchanted by the High Line Canal and the surprises along its Trail.  You can best reach Carol on her cell  720 404 8598 by text or leave a voice message; email is [email protected]

Meeting Location: Park at 9200 Cherry Creek S Dr, Denver, 80231. We will meet here at the end of the segment and then carpool to the beginning of the segment. Please be parked and ready to walk at 3:50 pm. We will leave no later than 4:05 pm to carpool to the starting destination.

Carpool to Here: Park on street near this address 301 S. Lansing, Aurora; park along Lansing. This is a neighborhood, so please be considerate and quiet as we gather. We will walk the segment together. At the end of the walk, we will carpool back to the beginning of the segment to return people to their cars.

Teamwork: In order for us to have a great time, enjoy the segment, and get everyone to the beginning and ends, we must work as a team. Patience, guidance and erring on the side of positivity are crucial for a successful and joyful segment.

Restrooms: Porta-potty at the new South Quebec Way Trailhead, mile marker 46.

Driving Liability: If you are not comfortable carpooling, please make other arrangements to meet us at the start of the walk and for you to depart the walk. Alternatively, you can take a Lyft. If you use this link and you’re a new Lyft user, you get a credit toward your first ride. If you have questions about how parking/carpooling/transit will work, please contact your walking movement leader. If you choose to drive, please remember that you must have liability insurance and you assume all risks as a driver or passenger. If asked, please be prepared to show your proof of insurance.

Welcome Waivers: Please fill out the online “Welcome Waiver” or download, print, sign, and turn in a hard copy. You only need to do this once a year with Walk2Connect.

Priority Registration: The walk is limited to 30 people. Priority will be given to High Line Canal Heroes and Walk2Connect Champions.

Final Details: You will receive final details about this segment on the day before we walk. Refer to this final details email for concluding comments about weather, parking, and conditions. If you do not receive this email by 5 pm the day before the walk, contact Lisa Alonge at 720-339-8766 immediately.

Your RSVP is important and will guide our communication about changes, parking, and other details. If you are walking with someone else, please have that person also sign up so that we have their email address and can track effectively.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome on 6-foot leashes. No retractable leashes. Please be sure to bring baggies and water for your dog and consider the carpooling scenarios if you bring your dog with you.

Tokens: For the walkers who complete all 14 segments of the Connecting the Canal event series according to the official schedule will receive a High Line Canal token. You can “make up” your segments with one of our volunteer Walking Movement Leaders.

What to bring: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and you may also want to include appropriate outerwear, hats, and gloves to accommodate for the weather. A headlamp or flashlight is advised.

Weather: We will walk in all weather conditions except ice and lightning. Those who registered will be notified by noon the day of the walk if the walk is canceled. No news is good news.

Cancellation Policy: We only cancel in extreme weather conditions on our path, such as ice, hail, or lightning.
