Connecting the Canal – Weekend Segment 4, Fly’n B Highlands Ranch (W&T)
March 17 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pmFree
TYPE: W&T | PACE: 3 mph |TERRAIN: Dirt/pebble trail; small hills | DIFFICULTY: Moderate| DISTANCE: Approx. 6 miles (5 miles along the canal trail and one mile back to the cars parked at the trailhead)
Walk Description: In partnership with the High Line Canal Conservancy, we will walk the entire High Line Canal, one segment at a time, covering most of the 71-mile trail. Check out our overview page here for the entire schedule.
Segment 4 of 14, Miles 15-10 | Fly’n B Highlands Ranch: On this segment, we’ll come to the first big break in the trail, where the Canal cannot be walked between miles 10 and 8. We will pick up the trail at Fly’n B and stop at mile marker 10. This segment of the trail traverses quite a variety of areas, including Fly’n B Ranch, crossing Santa Fe, ambling through Highlands Ranch. We’ll be walking in the Rolling Foothills Zone.
Walk Leaders: John Hoesterey and Chip Brunk from the High Line Canal Conservancy will lead this walk.
Meeting Location: Due to the recent removal of a vintage bridge across the canal near Mile Marker 10, most walkers will be asked to park at Fly’n B parking lot along Plaza Drive in Highlands Ranch. Selected walkers will be asked to park at a small trailhead at the end of West Brandon Drive. There are not enough parking spots at this trailhead for all of our cars to park here. On the previous segment, we’ll talk about this plan and solicit drivers with larger vehicles to park at the trailhead lot. Confirmed details will be in the email sent the day before this segment.
Carpool to Here: We will walk the segment together. At the end of the walk, we will carpool back to the beginning of the segment to return people to their cars.
Teamwork: In order for us to have a great time, enjoy the segment, and get everyone to the beginning and ends, we must work as a team. Patience, guidance and erring on the side of positivity are crucial for a successful and joyful segment.
Restrooms: There is a vault toilet at Fly’n B Park.
Driving Liability: If you are not comfortable carpooling, please make other arrangements to meet us at the start of the walk and for you to depart the walk. Alternatively, you can take a Lyft. If you use this link and you’re a new Lyft user, you get a credit toward your first ride. If you have questions about how parking/carpooling/transit will work, please contact your walking movement leader. If you choose to drive, please remember that you must have liability insurance and you assume all risks as a driver or passenger. If asked, please be prepared to show your proof of insurance.
Welcome Waivers: Please fill out the online “Welcome Waiver” or download, print, sign, and turn in a hard copy. You only need to do this once a year with Walk2Connect.
Final Details: You will receive final details about this segment on the day before we walk. Refer to this final details email for comments about weather, parking, and conditions. If you do not receive this email by 5 pm the day before the walk, contact Lisa Alonge at 720-339-8766 immediately.
RSVP: You must sign up to walk. Please use the RSVP feature below. Visit our main page here to sign-for additional segments. Your RSVP is important and will guide our communication about changes, parking, and other details. If you are walking with someone else, please have that person also sign up so that we have their email address and can track effectively.
Dogs: Dogs are welcome on 6-foot leashes. No retractable leashes. Please be sure to bring baggies and water for your dog and consider the carpooling scenarios if you bring your dog with you.
Tokens: For the walkers who complete all 14 segments of the Connecting the Canal event series according to the official schedule will receive a High Line Canal token. You can “make up” your segments with one of our volunteer Walking Movement Leaders.
What to bring: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and you may also want to include appropriate outerwear, hats, and gloves to accommodate for the weather.
Weather: We will walk in all weather conditions except ice and lightning. You will be notified by 8 pm the night before if the walk is canceled. No news is good news.
Cancellation Policy: We only cancel in extreme weather conditions on our path, such as ice, hail, or lightning.
