Connecting the Canal – Segment 5: A Long Amble through Littleton, Part 1

September 13 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

TYPE: W&T | PACE: 3 mph | TERRAIN: Dirt/pebble trail; small hills, sidewalk after we cross County Line Rd. | DIFFICULTY: Moderate| DISTANCE: Approx. 5 miles

Walk Description: In partnership with the High Line Canal Conservancy, we will walk the entire High Line Canal, one segment at a time, covering most of the 71-mile trail. Check out our overview page here for the entire schedule.

This walk is a FULL MOON walk. We will start just before sunset and finish after dark. You will need to bring a headlamp or flashlight. If you would rather not walk in the dark, you can walk it on your own, or ask a walking movement volunteer to lead at a different time.

Segment 5 of 14, Miles 20-15 | A Long Amble through Littleton, Part 1: On this segment, we leave Horseshoe Park and see some delightful backyards.  We’ll take a break at Writer’s Vista Park. We’ll start to understand how the current water system in Denver works as we pass McLellen Reservoir. We’ll officially leave Littleton when we walk under C470.

Walk Leader: Michelle Freeman, Community Outreach Coordinator with the High Line Canal Conservancy, will lead this walk. Michelle can be reached at [email protected] and her cell, 858 775 1843.

Meeting Location: Park at Fly’n B Park parking lot, 2910 Plaza Drive, Highlands Ranch, 80129.  We will meet here at the end of the segment and then carpool to the beginning of the segment. Please be parked and ready to walk at 6:20 pm. We will leave no later than 6:35 pm to carpool to the starting destination.

Carpool to Here: Park at 7595 S Elati St, Littleton. Trailhead is at the end of the street up the stairs. Please respect the neighborhood and stay quiet as we gather. We will walk the segment together. At the end of the walk, we will carpool back to the beginning of the segment to return people to their cars.

Teamwork: In order for us to have a great time, enjoy the segment, and get everyone to the beginning and ends, we must work as a team. Patience, guidance and erring on the side of positivity are crucial for a successful and joyful segment.

Restrooms: There are restrooms at the Fly’n B and at Writer’s Vista Park.

Driving Liability: If you are not comfortable carpooling, please make other arrangements to meet us at the start of the walk and for you to depart the walk. Alternatively, you can take a Lyft. If you use this link and you’re a new Lyft user, you get a credit toward your first ride. If you have questions about how parking/carpooling/transit will work, please contact your walking movement leader. If you choose to drive, please remember that you must have liability insurance and you assume all risks as a driver or passenger. If asked, please be prepared to show your proof of insurance.

Welcome Waivers: Please fill out the online “Welcome Waiver” or download, print, sign, and turn in a hard copy. You only need to do this once a year with Walk2Connect.

Priority Registration: The walk is limited to 30 people. Priority will be given to High Line Canal Heroes and Walk2Connect Champions.

Final Details: You will receive final details to your email address from Lisa Alonge about this segment on the Wednesday before we are scheduled to walk. Refer to this final details email for concluding comments about weather, parking, and conditions. If you do not receive this email by 9 pm the Wednesday before the walk, contact Lisa via text to 720 339 8766 or her email address [email protected]

RSVP: You must sign up to walk. Please use the RSVP feature below. Visit our main page here to sign-for additional segments. Your RSVP is important and will guide our communication about changes, parking, and other details. If you are walking with someone else, please have that person also sign up so that we have their email address and can track effectively.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome on 6-foot leashes. No retractable leashes. Please be sure to bring baggies and water for your dog and consider the carpooling scenarios if you bring your dog with you.

Tokens: Walkers who complete all 14 segments of the Connecting the Canal event series according to the official schedule will receive a High Line Canal token. You can “make up” up to two segments with one of our volunteer Walking Movement Leaders.

What to bring: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, bring 2 liters of water, and you may also want to include appropriate outerwear, hat, and sunscreen.

Weather: We will walk in all weather conditions except ice and lightning. Those who registered will be notified by 9pm the night before if the walk is canceled. No news is good news.

Cancellation Policy: We only cancel in extreme weather conditions on our path, such as ice, hail, or lightning.

Suggested Readings: The Thunder Tree by Pyle, High Line Canal by Denver Water, and Chris’ blog about the High Line Canal adventures.
