Connecting the Canal–Segment 1: Waterton Canyon High Line Canal (W&T)

October 5, 2018 @ 7:30 am

Segment 1: Waterton Canyon High Line Canal

TYPE: Walk & Talk (W&T) | PACE: 3 mph| TERRAIN: dirt trail with some elevation gain | DISTANCE: Approx. 4-5 mi | TIME: 3 hours |

As we finish our southerly trek on the High Line Canal Connecting the Canal series, in partnership with the High Line Canal Conservancy, we will walk from Waterton Canyon Parking Lot to the High Line Canal Diversion Structure at Mile Marker 0 of the High Line Canal Trail. We will walk approx 2 miles into the Canyon and then 2 miles back, for a total of 4-5 miles through the Wild Canyon Zone.

Walk Leader: Chris Englert is a long-time Walking Movement Leader, Member-Owner of Walk2Connect, and author of Best Urban Hikes: Denver and Walking Denver’s Neighborhoods. Follow her at, and at @urbanhikingDEN on social media. You can reach her at 303 507 7280 or [email protected]

Meeting Location: Park Waterton Canyon Trailhead 11300 Waterton Road Littleton, CO. There is no carpooling this segment. Please be parked and ready to walk at 7:20 am. We will leave no later than 7:35 to the starting destination.

Teamwork: In order for us to have a great time, enjoy the segment, and get everyone to the beginning and ends, we must work as a team. Patience, guidance and erring on the side of positivity are crucial for a successful and joyful segment.

Restrooms: There are restrooms at the trailhead and trailend.

Driving Liability: If you are not comfortable carpooling, please make other arrangements to meet us at the start of the walk and for you to depart the walk. Alternatively, you can take a Lyft. If you use this link and you’re a new Lyft user, you get a credit toward your first ride. If you have questions about how parking/carpooling/transit will work, please contact your walking movement leader. If you choose to drive, please remember that you must have liability insurance and you assume all risks as a driver or passenger. If asked, please be prepared to show your proof of insurance.

Welcome Waivers: Please fill out the online “Welcome Waiver” or download, print, sign, and turn in a hard copy. You only need to do this once a year with Walk2Connect.

Priority Registration: The walk is limited to 30 people. Priority will be given to High Line Canal Heroes and Walk2Connect Champions. If this walk is full, you may consider joining our Gentle High Line Canal Series which walks at 2 mph on Saturdays/Sundays.

Final Details: You will receive final details about this segment on the day before we walk. Refer to this final details email for concluding comments about weather, parking, and conditions. If you do not receive this email by 5 pm the day before the walk, contact your walking movement leader immediately.

RSVP: You must sign up to walk. Please use the RSVP feature below. Visit our main page here to sign-for additional segments. Your RSVP is important and will guide our communication about changes, parking, and other details. If you are walking with someone else, please have that person also sign up so that we have their email address and can track effectively.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome on 6-foot leashes. No retractable leashes. Please be sure to bring baggies and water for your dog and consider the carpooling scenarios if you bring your dog with you.

Tokens: For the walkers who complete all 14 segments of the Connecting the Canal event series according to the official schedule will receive a a High Line Canal token. You can “make up” your segments by joining the 3 mph Series or the Gentle Series or with one of our volunteer Walking Movement Leaders.

What to bring: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and you may also want to include appropriate outerwear, hats, and gloves to accommodate for the weather.

Weather: We will walk in all weather conditions except ice and lightening. You will be notified by 8 pm the night before if the walk is cancelled. No news is good news.

Cancellation Policy: We only cancel in extreme weather conditions on our path, such as ice, hail, or lightening.

Suggested Readings: The Thunder Tree by Pyle, High Line Canal by Denver Water, and Chris’ blog about the High Line Canal adventures.

Trip Notes:

-This particular segment is much different than the other 13 segments, as the Trail and the Canal do not meander hand-in-hand. We’ll only see the Canal off in the distance–but attending this segment is very important to understanding the Canal’s story, and even though it’s a lot of sidewalk walking through a neighborhood, it’s a don’t-miss segment.
