Denver’s Martin Luther King Jr. Marade!

January 18, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

TYPE: Program | PACE: Conversational & Exploratory (big crowd!) | TERRAIN: sidewalk, grass, road (might have snow!) | DISTANCE: Approx. 6 miles

You are invited to join Walk2Connect in the largest Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. march and rally in the country. The MLK Marade takes place on Monday, January 18th. Ceremonies kick-off around 9:30am and the walk (typically) should start at 10:30am (see full schedule below). The crowds take the streets on Colfax to the State Capitol. This is an annual event in Denver attracting thousands of people to walk and celebrate the life of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and what he stood for.

If you want to walk a shorter distance you can plan on taking a bus back (RTD 15), get someone to pick you up at or near the Capitol or you can exit the trip early and loop back to our starting location. We will be walking 6 miles (RT) and will try to hold to a time frame of 9-12:30AM going to and from the Capitol with a little extra time considering ceremonies can start late. You of course have the option to stay for the Civic Center Park ceremonies and to not go back with us. We will meet at Hooked on Colfax at 9am and will walk over to the park together at around 9:15am. We will walk back to City Park once arriving at Civic Center Park.

The advertised schedule for the Marade:

9:25 am Running in of the Torch
9:30 am Program Commences
10:30 am Laying of the Wreath
10:45 am Step Off to downtown

12:00 Noon – 1:00 pm Entertainment, Awards and Celebration
1:00… head out to Dr. MLK Service Projects

The ceremonies can linger well past 10:30 at times. If you are more interested in only the walking portion of the event, please plan to either find us by texting (303) 908-0076, looking for us near the Southwest part of the gathering on the fringes of the crowd, or by simply joining the walk around 10:30am. Because this is a very crowded event, there will be no formal waiver or sign-up. You are agreeing to be on your own and simply accompanying Walk2Connect in the Marade.

Mileage: 6 miles (round trip to Capitol and back)

Difficulty: Easy – Moderate (consider 6 mile round trip walking distance)

Terrain: (Urban) All sidewalks and road.

Schedule & Meeting Location: We will meet at 9AM in front of Hooked on Colfax Coffee House near Steele & East Colfax

Parking: There should be parking on residential streets but considering the parade you may need to park a few blocks out.

Cost: FREE!

Dog Friendly (sorta) Please note that there are a lot of people and that dogs could easily get stepped on or feel trapped.

Weather: We are in the Winter season, so please come prepared with enough layers and/or waterproof gear in case we do run into cooler weather or rain.

Breaks, Restrooms: There should be places to use the restroom along the way.

Consider Bringing:

– Comfortable socks & shoes (pref. NON cotton socks!)

– Light backpack w/water and snack foods (almonds, bars, fruit)

– Gloves, scarf, beanie

– Journal or Notebook

– Camera

– Sunglasses & Sunscreen (and hat if you wear them)

– Bring many (thinner) layers depending on anticipated temperature and light rain gear just in case.  I would avoid big/bulky winter coats as you will warm up once we walk and its way easier to shed/store light clothing.
