Top 10 Denver Urban Hikes: Rocky Mountain Arsenal
December 3, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm$10 – $15
Walk and Talk. 4-5 miles. Conversational Pace. Soft surface.
Come walk with the author in this Top 10 Denver Urban Hikes Series. On Mondays at 10:00 (see schedule below), we’ll walk 10 of the best hikes in the book, Best Urban Hikes: Denver, by Chris Englert. Each hike will meet at the specified trail head at 9:55, leaving no later than 10:05. All the hikes vary by length, so plan accordingly for your time.
This walk: This is the final walk in the series. Saving what might be Denver’s best urban hike, we’ll explore the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge. Come here the history of how homesteaders were asked to pack up and move, weapons were built for many decades, the space race took off here, and eagles landed on what became a Superfund site. It’s an interesting history of politics, weapons, chemicals and wildlife. We may see bison, deer, and coyotes. We’ll most likely see ferrets, prairie dogs, bunnies, burrowing owls, bald eagles, and an assortment of birds of prey.
Prior to the walk, you may want to arrive early to enjoy the visitor’s center. After the walk, you may want to take time to drive the 45-minute bison tour.
