PRGM: Vision Zero Love-In Walk
February 12, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 11:30 am
TYPE: Program | PACE: Conversational & Exploratory (march/crowd) | TERRAIN: Some incline, paved, urban streets | DISTANCE: Approx. 1 mile
Join WalkDenver, BikeDenver, the Transit Alliance, the Mayor’s Bicycle Advisory Committee (MBAC), the Mayor’s Pedestrian Advisory Committee (MPAC), and Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation (INC) on the Friday before Valentine’s Day for a rally in support of Vision Zero. A growing international movement, Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. Denver Mayor Hancock’s 2016 budget includes $350,000 to create a plan and public marketing campaign that will “formally declare” Denver as a Vision Zero city. The Vision Zero Love-In will be a truly multi-modal event, with bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit riders meeting at one or more locations and traveling together (along a different route for each mode) to the steps of the City and County building. The rally will culminate with the delivery to Mayor Hancock of hand-signed Valentine’s from Denver residents declaring their love for safe streets and support for the swift, complete and equitable implementation of Vision Zero projects and policies in Denver. Residents who are unable to attend the rally will be able to sign Valentine’s prior to February 12th, as well as submit virtual Valentine’s online. The rally will demonstrate to the Mayor, City Council, and City Department Heads that Denver residents want streets that are safe for all people, particularly the most vulnerable users traveling on foot or by bike. No one should have to die, simply trying to get around the city. For more information on the rally or other multi-modal routes, please visit the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/1670836243134076/
The Walking Route: to the Rally will meet at the Fillmore Auditorium at 11am and will walk down Colfax through Civic Center Park to the City & County Building at 14th & Bannock. Arriving there by 11:30, we will have pre-made valentines that attendees can sign to give to the mayor in support of Vision Zero. The rally will go until 1pm and you are welcome to stay. You are encouraged to wear RED since it is a Valentine’s Love-In! Note: this walking trip will end at the CCD Building, you may conclude your trip there, or walk or take the bus back to the Fillmore on your own afterward.
RSVP & Weather Policy: Walk & rally on, no matter the weather! If you would like to be informed of updates in the case of extreme weather conditions, please RSVP for this WALK and rally here.
*Because this is a very crowded event, there will be no formal waiver or sign-in. You are agreeing to be on your own and simply accompanying Walk2Connect to the Vision Zero Rally.
*Please bring yourself and your voice! Encouraged but not required: signs in support of Vision Zero, fun outfits (WEAR RED!), and cameras. We’ll have some fun items like balloons and boas, but you are welcome to bring your own!
*Well-behaved dogs and kids are welcome!
*This is a one-way walk. You may conclude your trip at the CCD building, or walk or take the bus back to the Fillmore on your own afterward.
