VOL: Ongoing Walkshop Assessments
January 24, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
TYPE: Volunteer | PACE: Slow & Conversational | TERRAIN: Mostly Flat Paved Sidewalks | DISTANCE: Approx. 1-2 miles |
Are you interested in volunteering on WalkShop (walking workshop) neighborhood assessments in or around your neighborhood? Help us gather information about walking, biking, and transit around schools and recreation centers in Denver to help us understand community needs for health and active living! This information will help the Community Active Living Coalition (CALC) prioritize and advocate for policy, systems, and infrastructure improvements in the city of Denver. You’ll learn how to use infrastructure assessment tools (including WALKscope.org) and look critically at the built environment and the way it affects walkability, bikability, and transit use.
These WalkShops are taking place at over 100 schools and recreation centers throughout Denver! Check the schedule below for a date, time, and location that works best for you! At the Walkshop, we’ll first go through a quick run-through of the tools we’ll be using. They are a combination of paper forms (which will be provided) and an online survey at WALKscope.org using your mobile device’s built-in browser or one of our tablets. After a quick training, you’ll dive in and start filling out surveys on your own (with our support of course). Once everyone feels comfortable with the surveys & terminology, we may split into smaller groups of 2-3 to cover different sections of the site area. Each site takes approximately 1.5-2.5 hours to complete, depending on how many volunteers and your speed. If we’ve split into smaller groups, we’ll reconvene at the site at the end to discuss additional findings and turn in survey forms.

Cancellation & Weather Policy:
It is important for these assessments to have visibility of sidewalk and bike lane conditions, so if there are severe weather conditions that limit visibility we will likely cancel. Look for an email for me morning-of or evening-before if you suspect poor conditions, or contact me directly. If it’s just cold, but we can see the sidewalks, just bundle up and come out!
What to Bring: – warm clothes & layers, gloves & hat – water – your fully charged smartphone if you plan to use your own device (We have tablets available for you to use if this is not an option for you)
We’ll Provide: – light snack – pens & stylus pens for tablets/smartphones – 2 tablets & wireless hotspot cards for those who do not have their own device
Dog Policy: Since you’ll be walking along with paper forms and a tablet or phone at a slow pace, we recommend you do not bring your dog along.
