Hike Waterton Canyon and Learn How to Walk the High Line Canal Trail
TYPE: W&T | PACE: 3 mph |TERRAIN: Soft surface| DIFFICULTY: Moderate|
DISTANCE: Approx. 4 miles
The High Line Canal Trail is a 71 mile trail that traverses from Waterton Canyon to Green Valley Ranch through the beautiful mosaic of Highlands Ranch, Littleton, Centennial, Arapahoe County, Denver, and Aurora. Over the entire 71 miles, the elevation changes 200 feet total. Walking the entire 71 miles is an adventure you’ll never forget and one everyone in metro Denver must do.
Learn How to Hike the High Line Canal Trail
Have you ever wondered how to hike the entire 71 miles of the High Line Canal and its Trail? Want to do it on your own, but not quite sure how to do it? Want to learn where to find the maps? Got some questions about the High Line Canal? This is the hike for you!
On this hike, we’ll do “Segment 1” together. We’ll hike into Waterton Canyon for two miles, see the head gate of the High Line Canal and where the Canal starts, and explain how you can walk the entire 71 miles by yourself. This hike is a 4-mile round-trip, question-and-answer session where we’ll explain the 14 segments, discuss where the High Line Canal Trail goes, how to get around the broken parts of the trail, and where the Canal and Trail actually end. We’ll even introduce you to the 138 year history of this amazing urban treasure. Staff from the High Line Canal Conservancy, who is sponsoring this walk as a gift to you, will be on-hand to answer questions, too.
Your walking movement leader: Chris Englert, member-owner of Walk2Connect Co-op and author of Best Urban Hikes: Denver and Walking Denver’s Neighborhoods, has walked all 71 miles of the High Line Canal Trail 7 times, leading over 300 people along its many segments. She is currently writing the High Line Canal Guide for the High Line Canal Conservancy.
