Earth Day Along the Sand Creek Regional Greenway

Celebrate Earth Day spreading cheer and good wishes for monarch butterflies! Did you know that milkweed and monarch butterflies thrive in each other’s company? In fact, they help each other out through a symbiotic relationship. The monarchs pollinate the milkweed, and the milkweed provides a crucial nursery for new monarch butterflies to hatch as monarch caterpillars only eat milkweed plants. Help us ensure the survival of the monarch butterfly by scattering milkweed seed bombs “Johnny Appleseed” style while we walk, pick up trash, and enjoy the Sand Creek Regional Greenway. Kathryn Hokamp of the Butterfly Pavilion will share with us about the relationship between monarch butterflies and milkweed plants. We will walk about 5.5 miles from Commerce City Wetland Park to Sand Creek Park for an ending celebration. Walking Movement Leaders & Hosts: Maria Rosa Galter, core-owner of Walk2Connect and all-around lover of nature; and Ana Luisa Gallardo, W2C Spanish Walking Movement Leader and amazing community leader. Carpooling: In order for all of us to complete this walk, we will organize into carpools. If you are not willing to BOTH drive and ride in a carpool, please contact Maria immediately so we can make other arrangements. Please remember that we will be working as one giant team, and all members of the team are necessary for everyone to have a positive experience. Meeting Location, Parking, Carpooling, and Planning: We will meet at the end of the segment. Park at the Trail End parking lot at Sand Creek Park, 2700 North Peoria Street. Please be parked and ready to walk by 8:00 am. If you want to take transit, take Bus 20 to Montview Blvd and Peoria Street and walk north about 20 mins to the park. We will leave no later than 8:10 am to carpool to the trailhead at Commerce City Wetland Park, 6198 E. 52nd Ave Commerce City, 80022. We will gather into a smaller group of cars and drive to the start of the walk. If you are not comfortable carpooling, please make other arrangements to meet us at the start of the walk and for you to depart the walk. Alternatively, you can take a Lyft. If you use this link and you’re a new Lyft user, you get a credit toward your first ride. We will then walk the segment. When we get to the Trail End, a group of drivers will be needed to carpool the original drivers back to their cars.
