Day 20: Star Gazing (on your Bingo Card)
Daily Task: Your WALKtober Challenge is to go Star Gazing.
On top of 2 full moons this month, we have the opportunity to witness multiple beautiful meteor showers this month too! Tonight we can experience the peak of the Orionid Meteor Shower.
While am not an expert meteoriticist, maybe we have somebody in this group who is, I am an avid stargazer. Here are a few tips to enjoy these beautiful fireballs blazing through the night sky.
1) No Light - See if you can get to a place with little light pollution. I live in the suburbs so it is difficult, however, if I walk 1 mile away I can see the clear open sky with limited light pollution. *If you are in CO, the smoke might come into play, still get out and see if you can catch a glimpse. It was clear for me last night!
2) Timing: On the night/morning of the 20/21 is the best time to watch this meteor shower. You can see them anywhere from 11 pm to 5 am with the best time being 1-2 am. You will be able to see 15-30 meteors per hour! I have goosebumps just thinking about it.
3) Comfort: My favorite way to experience meteor showers is to cozy up with a warm blanket. If you stay home, warm up a blanket in the dryer and repeat each time it cools down. If you are on a walk, dress nice and warm so you aren't shivering when you stop to gaze at the sky. *Remember, stay safe. We want you to feel safe while walking at night or during the day. This might be a good time to have your buddy (or one of us) on speed dial just to be safe. Grab a flashlight or headlamp for your trip.
4) Experience: If you are with others, the oh's and the ah's are pretty magical to share together. If you are walking alone, remember we are all doing this tonight. In London, Dallas, Minnesota, New York, & all over Colorado (I am sure I missed a ton of other locations). We are all under the same sky together.
*Share your experience with us.
If you have cool facts or insights on this meteor shower feel free to post in the FB group or send them to our inbox.
I am so incredibly proud of each and every one of you. You all joined this with a specific purpose and you are 11 days away from completing this challenge. Be proud of all that you have done. Right here. Right Now. Don't let 1 missed day or self-criticism get in the way of finishing this challenge. You are a STAR to us, keep moving!
